Diabetes Teaching Centre

Currently CD Whyte Ridge Pharmacy is in the process of gaining certification to become a Diabetes Teaching Centre to help teach diabetics how to manage their disease. Diabetes (a general term which includes types 1, 2 and gestational diabetes) is one of the most common diseases in Canada with an annual cost of over $9 billion dollars to the health care system. Affecting more than 2 million Canadians (many of whom do not even know they have the disease) the incidence of diabetes is reaching alarming proportions in Canada and around the world.

Fortunately, in many cases, diabetes can be controlled by lifestyle changes (including diet, nutritional supplements and exercise), treatments which CD Whyte Ridge has always relied upon. Our pharmacists believe that, by treating each case individually the health of the patient can be increased dramatically. At the same time the patient is encouraged to understand their own health and lifestyle choices so they become a partner in the fight against the disease instead of a passive observer.

CD Whyte Ridge currently teaches a variety of skills to their patients who have diabetes. We educate patients in proper foot care (very important to diabetics) and how to test the blood sugar level (using the glucose meter which gives an almost-instant reading) along with other skills. For more information you can arrange private consultations with our specially trained pharmacists by phone at (204) 488-1819 or by email.
